Sosnowiec is a city with poviat rights within the Slaskie Voivodship, occupying just over 91 sq. km. In
terms of population, it is the largest city from the Dabrowski Basin and the third in the Slaskie
Voivodship after Katowice and Czestochowa. Inhabited by about 204 thousand people at the end of 2017.
The name of the city comes from pine forests growing in these areas before 1830. Sosnowiec was created
as a result of merging many towns in 1902 and had a mining and metallurgical character. After 1989, it
was transformed into an industrial and commercial city. The advantage of Sosnowiec, conducive to
conducting business here, is its convenient location in terms of using road and car transport. From
Sosnowiec, only 24 km from the airport in Pyrzowice and about 70 km from the airport in Balice.
